Combining ability of maize inbred lines evaluated in three environments in Brazil Scientia Agricola
Nass,Luciano Lourenço; Lima,Marlene; Vencovsky,Roland; Gallo,Paulo Boller.
For tropical areas like Brazil, genotype x environment interaction is an important source of variation. Our objectives were to examine the combining abilities and their interaction with environments in ten selected maize (Zea mays L.) inbred lines in diallel crosses and to identify candidates for promising hybrid combinations. Crosses and checks were evaluated through a 7 x 7 triple lattice design at three locations during the 1984/85 season. Several agronomic traits were evaluated, but here only data on ear yield are discussed. Yield data were adjusted for stand variation (correction to 50 plants per plot) and grain moisture (15.5%). Data for ear yield were analysed using an adaptation of Griffing’s method IV for complete diallel crosses, and experiments...

Combining ability of tropical maize cultivars in organic and conventional production systems Ciência Rural
Oliveira,Lucimar Rodrigues de; Miranda,Glauco Vieira; DeLima,Rodrigo Oliveira; Souza,Leandro Vagno de; Galvão,João Carlos Cardoso; Santos,Izabel Cristina dos.
The objectives were to identify maize germplasm for the organic productions system and to compare the genetic effects of the grain yield of maize cultivars in organic and conventional production systems. Diallel crosses were made between six maize cultivars and the hybrid combinations were evaluated in conventional and organic production systems. The hybrid combinations produced different grain yields in the two production systems. The interaction between general combining ability and production systems was significant for grain yield, ear height and number of ears. This indicates that the additive genetic effects differ in organic and conventional production systems. The specific combining abilities (SCA) were significant for grain yield and plant height,...

Epistasis and genotype-by-environment interaction of grain protein content in durum wheat Genet. Mol. Biol.
Bnejdi,Fethi; Gazzah,Mohamed El.
Parental, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2 generations of four crosses involving four cultivars of durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) were evaluated at two sites in Tunisia. A three-parameter model was found inadequate for all cases except crosses Chili x Cocorit 71 at site Sidi Thabet and Inrat 69 x Karim at both sites. In most cases a digenic epistatic model was sufficient to explain variation in generation means. Dominance effects (h) and additive x additive epistasis (i) (when significant) were more important than additive (d) effects and other epistatic components. Considering the genotype-by-environment interaction, the non-interactive model (m, d, h, e) was found adequate. Additive variance was higher than environmental variance in three crosses at both sites....

Estimates of heritability and genotype-environment interactions for body weight in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) raised under communal rearing conditions ArchiMer
Saillant, Eric; Dupont Nivet, Mathilde; Haffray, Pierrick; Chatain, Beatrice.
Genetic parameters for somatic growth rate in sea bass were estimated in two experiments where 27 (year-class 1997) to 30 (year-class 1998) families of sea bass (3 dams mated with 9-10 sires according to a full factorial design) were raised mixed in the same tanks starting shortly before hatching (48 h post fertilization). Trials were performed under two temperature (experiment 1, 1997: group high temperature (HT) and group low temperature (LT)) and two density regimes (experiment 2, 1998: group high density (HD) and group low density (LD)) with a subset of the mating design (18 families) being reproduced in the two experiments. All the fish were genotyped at 3-6 microsatellite loci which allowed them to be assigned to the individual breeders used in the...

Gene flow and local adaptation: Antagonistic forces shape populations of Ilex dumosa (Aquifoliaceae) Boletín de la Sociedad
Coulleri,Juan Pablo.
The evolutionary forces acting in a set of populations may vary in space, resulting in Genotype x Environment interaction for Darwinian fitness, fixing in some populations adaptative traits of a local population to a specific environmental conditions or, by gene flow homogenize the genes frequencies and make a set of population adapted to a group of environments. This paper tries to elucidate the population dynamics of a set of populations of Ilex dumosa Reiss., in which was measured quantitative traits of six populations from six geographic regions and test their responses to environmental changes. The experimental approach was made in common garden experiment and by reciprocal transplant experiment. Local adaptation was investigated both by native...

Natural selection and family X location interaction in the common (dry) bean plant Genet. Mol. Biol.
Pirola,Luís Henrique; Ramalho,Magno Antonio Patto; Carneiro,José Eustáquio S.; Abreu,Ângela de Fátima Barbosa.
Natural selection takes place while advancing generations of segregant populations of self pollinating species by the population (bulk) method. There is evidence that it maintains the individuals with greater grain yield. The question arises whether natural selection preserves the individuals which are more adapted only to the environment where the generation advance occurred, that is, if it contributes to increasing the genotype x environment interaction in the family assessment. This study was carried out to check this hypothesis in the common bean plant using families derived from a segregating population from a cross between the Carioca MG x ESAL 686 cultivars. The segregating populations increase in homozygosity was obtained by the population (bulk)...
